「已經沒有東西可以給牠們吃了」
戰鬥的結束不是勝利，是資源耗盡。海明威用一句極平的陳述取消了任何英雄式的收尾——鯊魚不是被打退的，是沒東西吃了才走。
嘴裡的銅味
血。他「有一瞬間怕了起來」——那是全書他唯一一次怕自己（前面所有的恐懼都是關於魚、鯊魚、線、手）。而下一句立刻是「可是那味道不多」：連內出血都要秤量，然後繼續掌舵。
「做個夢，夢見你殺了一個人」
他朝海裡吐了一口血，把它餵給鯊魚。這是全書最後一次反擊，而武器是自己的血。這句話的語法很妙——make a dream（做個夢）不是標準英語，是西班牙語 hacer un sueño 的直譯痕跡，海明威讓老人在最後的挑釁裡露出母語。
「沒有任何念頭、也沒有任何感覺。他已經越過了一切。」
He was past everything now——全書最像關機的一句。⚠️ 對照第 18 節他還在想運氣、想買賣、想禱詞；現在意識只剩下一個功能：把船開回母港。而海明威緊接著寫他「盡量聰明地」（as intelligently as he could）——連關機之後，職業本能還在運轉。
「她很好」
全書唯一沒有受損的東西是那條船。⚠️ 他先關心的是船，不是自己、也不是魚。「除了舵柄以外哪裡都沒有壞。那個很容易換。」——這是一個漁夫在盤點明天還能不能出海。（呼應第 15 節「等回到家，我和男孩會把它們接起來」。）
「床是我的朋友」
從「風是我們的朋友（有時候）」到「大海裡有我們的朋友也有我們的敵人」，一路收縮到一張床。⚠️ 全書的「朋友」清單：飛魚、星星、鼠海豚、那條大魚、男孩、風、海——最後只剩下床。這個遞減本身就是一份精疲力竭的清單。
「被打敗以後，事情就容易了。我從來不知道有多容易。」
全書最令人心碎的一句，而它聽起來像鬆一口氣。不必再撐了、不必再想了、不必再證明了。海明威把全書最沉重的時刻寫得極輕——這是「被毀滅但不被打敗」的另一面：被打敗其實是舒服的，而那正是他一輩子在抵抗的東西。
「什麼打敗了你？」「沒有。我跑太遠了。」
⚠️ 全書的定讞。他拒絕承認任何對手——不是鯊魚、不是運氣、不是年紀、不是海。「沒有東西打敗我。是我自己跑太遠了。」這句話同時是最徹底的自負（沒有對手夠格）與最徹底的認罪（責任全在我）。而它與第 17 節「我不該跑那麼遠」、第 18 節「你跑到那麼外面去的時候就糟蹋了運氣」構成三次重複——海明威用三次判詞把全書的悲劇歸因於一件事：距離，也就是野心。
扛桅杆上坡、跌倒、坐下五次
⚠️ 全書釘刑意象的完成。背著木頭走上坡、在坡頂跌倒、途中必須停下五次（傳統的苦路 Via Dolorosa 有耶穌三次跌倒的站點）——而海明威一個字都沒有提到基督。他讓意義完全由動作承擔。中間那隻「忙牠自己的事」的貓更是神來之筆：世界完全不在意這件事的發生。
手掌向上的睡姿
with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up——兩臂伸開、手掌朝上。這是釘刑的形狀，也是投降的姿勢，同時也只是一雙傷到不能翻過來的手。三層意義同時成立，而海明威只寫了姿勢。
男孩看見的是手，不是魚
⚠️ 全書最後的判詞。外面海灘上所有漁夫都圍著那具骨架、驚嘆十八英尺；只有男孩看的是那雙手。世界會記得魚有多大，只有一個人記得那雙手付出了什麼。而他「先確認老人還在呼吸」——說明他心裡最壞的打算是什麼。
十八英尺，用一段繩子量出來
⚠️ 世界要到這裡才承認那條魚存在過。沒有磅秤、沒有官方紀錄，只有一個捲起褲管站在水裡的漁夫和一段繩子。十八英尺約 5.5 公尺——確實比老人那條小船還長（第 9 節「牠比這條小船還長兩英尺」，前後完全吻合）。海明威用一個最樸素的計量方式，替全書做了唯一的客觀認證。
「我相信」
男孩對十八英尺的回應只有兩個字。⚠️ 對照第 1 節男孩說的「好漁夫很多，了不起的也有幾個。可是就只有一個你」——他從頭到尾沒有懷疑過。而他接著做的事是點一罐熱咖啡、多加牛奶和糖，並且說「等一下我再看他能吃什麼」——照顧者的角色正式交接。
老闆的最後一句
「那是條什麼樣的魚啊。從來沒有過那樣的魚。」⚠️ 緊接著他補了一句：「你昨天抓的那兩條也是好魚。」——生活立刻回到日常，讚嘆與生意在同一口氣裡說完。海明威不讓任何一個時刻停留太久，這也是全書最後那個著名收尾（獅子的夢）前的最後一級台階。
📖 導讀
全書最沉、也最溫柔的一節。
大約晚上十點，他看見城市燈火反射在天上的光暈——起初微弱得像月亮升起前的天光，然後在越來越大的風浪對面穩定地亮著。他往光暈裡側掌舵，心想很快就會碰上灣流的邊緣。
現在結束了，他想。牠們大概還會再來撞我。可是一個人在黑暗裡、沒有武器，能拿牠們怎麼辦？
半夜牠們成群來了，而這一次他知道打也沒有用。他只看得見鰭在水裡劃出的線和牠們撲上魚時的磷光。他朝著頭砸下去，聽見顎骨咬合的聲音、感覺到船在晃；他對著只能感覺和聽見的東西拚命揮棍——然後他感覺到有什麼東西咬住了棍子，棍子就沒了。
他把舵柄從舵上扯下來，雙手握著劈砍，一次又一次地往下砸。最後一條撞上魚頭本身，他就知道結束了。他用舵柄橫砸那條鯊魚的頭——一次、兩次、又一次——他聽見舵柄斷了，就拿那截碎裂的斷端往鯊魚身上猛戳。他感覺到它扎進去，知道它很尖，就再扎一次。鯊魚鬆口翻走了。
那是那群鯊魚裡最後一條來的。已經沒有東西可以給牠們吃了。
老人幾乎喘不過氣，嘴裡有一股奇怪的味道——帶著銅味，還有點甜，他有一瞬間怕了起來。可是那味道不多。
他朝海裡吐了一口，說：「吃了那個吧，Galanos。做個夢，夢見你殺了一個人。」
他知道自己這回是終於被打敗了，而且無可挽回。他回到船尾，發現舵柄那截鋸齒狀的斷端剛好卡得進舵的槽裡，夠他掌舵。他把麻布袋圍好，把船帶回航線。
