「你殺 dentuso 的時候是享受的」
老人不放過自己。第 16 節他才用 malignancy（徹底的惡意）殺了馬加鯊，這裡立刻回頭審查那份惡意。而他替馬加鯊說的話幾乎是讚美：牠靠活魚維生（跟我一樣）、不是食腐動物、不只是一張會移動的胃口、美、高貴、什麼都不怕。他能恨牠，但不能否認牠的等級。
「打魚殺我，正如它讓我活著」
全書最平靜的一句生存哲學。沒有轉折、沒有感嘆，兩件事同時成立。緊接的「是那男孩讓我活著」把這句話從抽象拉回具體——而後面那句「我不可以太過欺騙自己」是全書最誠實的一次自我提醒：他知道自己活著靠的是誰。
「Ay」與釘穿手掌
全書唯一一次明確的基督受難意象。海明威極其節制——他不說「像基督」，只說「像一個人感覺到釘子穿過手掌、釘進木頭」，而且加了 perhaps。可是意象一旦放進來就收不回去：兩手血肉模糊、在木船上、接下來要承受一連串的折磨、最後扛著桅杆走上坡（那是全書結尾的畫面）。海明威把宗教的重量放進來，又不讓它壓垮寫實。
galano 這個名字的諷刺
西語 galano 的本義是「打扮體面的、優雅的」。漁民用一個讚美的字來叫這種最下流的鯊魚——這種反諷式的命名在各地漁村都很常見。而老人一整節反覆喊 Galanos，語氣從辨識（那是鏟鼻鯊）到挑釁（來吧，Galanos）再到咒罵（去見你媽）。
galanos 的生態：全書唯一沒有尊嚴的生物

殺法的降級

「腦子與脊髓接合處的線清清楚楚」

鯊魚是軟骨魚
「他感覺到軟骨被切斷。」鯊魚屬軟骨魚綱，全身骨骼是軟骨——所以刀切得進去，而且切下去的手感是「斷」而不是「碎」。海明威沒有解釋這個生物學事實，可是他寫對了。
「像鏡子背面那層銀」
