(Luque and Mike Gonzalez)
Qué va
「大井」(the great well)與七百噚

There were other boats from the other beaches going out to sea and the old man heard the dip and push of their oars even though he could not see them now the moon was below the hills.

But most of the boats were silent except for the dip of the oars.
They spread apart after they were out of the mouth of the harbour and each one headed for the part of the ocean where he hoped to find fish.
The old man knew he was going far out and he left the smell of the land behind and rowed out into the clean early morning smell of the ocean.
He saw the phosphorescence of the Gulf weed in the water as he rowed over the part of the ocean that the fishermen called the great well because there was a sudden deep of seven hundred fathoms where all sorts of fish congregated because of the swirl the current made against the steep walls of the floor of the ocean.
Here there were concentrations of shrimp and bait fish and sometimes schools of squid in the deepest holes and these rose close to the surface at night where all the wandering fish fed on them.

Why did they make birds so delicate and fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel?
She is kind and very beautiful.
But she can be so cruel and it comes so suddenly and such birds that fly, dipping and hunting, with their small sad voices are made too delicately for the sea."
I know many tricks and I have resolution——他承認力氣可能不夠,但列出自己真正的本錢:技術與決心。
What he lacked in strength he made up for in resolution./他力氣上的不足,全靠決心補了回來。
- 詞源 × 實用度:拉丁 resolvere(re- 再 + solvere 鬆開)→ 「把難題解開」→ 引申「下定決心」。
2Qué vaKK [ke ˈbɑ](interj.,
You must be tired." "Qué va, I could go all night."/「你一定累了。」
No way!。
No way 100% | Come on 95% | Nonsense 60% | Qué va(西語圈內 100%)
Very well, Manolin," the old man said./「很好,馬諾林,」老人說。
Manuel → Manolo → Manolín(
4thole pinKK [θol pɪn](n.)
He fitted the rope lashings of the oars onto the thole pins,一句話就說明了這條船有多樸素。
One of the thole pins had worn loose and rattled with every stroke./有一根槳栓磨鬆了,每划一下就咯咯響。
傳統小船專用詞;現代小艇多用 oarlock(英式 rowlock)。
- 詞性變化:n. thole pin(複數 thole pins)| n. thole(同義,較舊)。
5fathomKK [ˈfæðəm](n.)
a sudden deep of seven hundred fathoms = 陡然陷下去七百噚(約 1,280 公尺)。
The chart showed forty fathoms just outside the reef./海圖顯示礁外就有四十噚深。
I can't fathom why he did it(我實在想不通他為什麼那麼做)。
- 詞性變化:n. fathom(複數 fathoms,計量時常不加 s)| v. fathom(過去式 fathomed)| adj. unfathomable(深不可測的、無法理解的)。
6oakumKK [ˈokəm](n.)
The seams were packed with oakum and payed with hot pitch./船板的縫裡塞滿麻絮,再澆上熱瀝青。
- 詞源 × 實用度:古英語 ācumba(梳理下來的廢麻)。
- 詞性變化:n. oakum(不可數)。相關 v. caulk(填縫,很常用)。
7roadsteadKK [ˈrodˌstɛd](n.)
the different harbours and roadsteads of the Canary Islands = 加納利群島各個不同的港灣與泊地——用 harbour 與 roadstead 並列,是內行人的分法。
They anchored in the roadstead to wait for the tide./他們在泊地下錨,等潮水。
- 詞性變化:n. roadstead(複數 roadsteads)| n. roads(同義)。
8phosphorescenceKK [ˌfɑsfəˈrɛsṇs](n.)
the phosphorescence of the Gulf weed in the water——馬尾藻在黑水裡發光,是老人辨認「大井」的路標之一。
Their oars stirred green phosphorescence in the black water./他們的槳在黑水裡攪出綠色的磷光。
9congregateKK [ˈkɑŋgrɪˌget](v.)
all sorts of fish congregated because of the swirl——各種魚因為漩渦聚在那裡。
Seabirds congregate where the currents meet./海鳥聚集在洋流交會的地方。
- 詞源 × 實用度:拉丁 con-(一起)+ grex/greg-(羊群)——與 gregarious(愛交際的)、segregate(隔離,字面「把羊分開」)、egregious 同源。
- 詞性變化:v. congregate(過去式 congregated/現在分詞 congregating)| n. congregation | adj. congregational。
10tern / sea swallowKK [tɝn]/ [si ˈswɑlo](n.)
A tern hovered, dipped, and rose again with nothing./一隻燕鷗懸停、俯衝,又空著飛了上來。
- 詞性變化:n. tern(複數 terns)。
the high capes and the great brown mountains = 高高的岬角和褐色的大山,是老人非洲夢裡的地貌。
They rounded the cape at first light./他們在天剛亮時繞過了那個岬角。
地理常用詞(好望角 Cape of Good Hope、開普敦 Cape Town)。
- 詞性變化:n. cape(複數 capes)。同源字 caput、capital、decapitate(斬首)。
12principalKK [ˈprɪnsəpḷ](adj.)
- 詞義:flying fish ... were his principal friends on the ocean = 飛魚是他在海上主要的朋友。⚠️ 最容易拼錯的英文字之一:principal(主要的;校長;本金)vs principle(原則、原理)——同音,意思完全不同。記法:principal 裡的 al 想成「the princip*al* is your p*al*(校長是你的夥伴)」。
Fishing was the principal industry of the village./打魚是這村子的主要產業。
13inferiorKK [ɪnˈfɪrɪɚ](adj.)
It is as though I were inferior(好像我比人低一等)——這一句解釋了老人為什麼用握腳的方式叫他:同樣是叫醒,一種讓人覺得被使喚,一種讓人保有尊嚴。
He never made anyone feel inferior./他從不讓任何人覺得自己低人一等。
- 詞源 × 實用度:拉丁 inferus(下面的)的比較級,與 infernal(地獄的)同源。常用;注意搭配是 inferior to(不是 than):This model is inferior to the old one.
- 詞性變化:adj. inferior | n. inferior(下屬)| n. inferiority(inferiority complex 自卑情結)| 反義 superior。
He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach.
He no longer thought about the money, nor the title, nor the people who had left. He thought only of the garden./他不再想錢,不再想頭銜,不再想那些離開的人。
- 特徵:海明威把老人的想法用引號括起來、當成一段話寫(and he thought, "The birds have a harder life than we do..."),不是傳統的自由間接引語。
- 原文例:and he thought, "The birds have a harder life than we do except for the robber birds... She is kind and very beautiful. But she can be so cruel..."——注意這裡的 she 指海,這個陰性代名詞下一節會被正式解釋(la mar)。
He looked at the empty road and thought, "You waited long enough. Now you go home and you eat and you sleep."/他看著空蕩蕩的路,心裡想:「你等夠久了。
